Based on your first chunk of reading, discuss Anne Frank's perspective. What has shaped it and how?

There are many things that shape Anne into the person that she is, how she views her everyday life, and what she thinks of her family in the situation that they are in. I think Anne has a more negative perspective on life than a positive one. The first thing that I noticed is how she feels about herself. I think she tends to share more with her diary about her personal life than she ever would with another person in a face to face conversation. Anne feels like she has no one to talk to mainly because of her personality. "I have come to the root of the matter, the reason for my starting a diary: it is that I have no such real friend... Perhaps I lack confidence, but anyway, there it is, a stubborn fact and I don't seem to be able to do anything about it" (Frank 3). After reading this diary entry, it made me realize that she doesn't have anyone who she can trust with her feelings and she can't seem to find the perfect true friend to tell her thoughts to other than her diary. I wonder who she would go to to express her feelings and troubles if she had never received the diary for her birthday? Also Anne has a complicated relationship with her mother, and they don't get along that well. I think she doesn't act like a “mom” to Anne anymore, and I also think that Anne does not want her to act like a mom. Anne would much rather have her father do things with her rather than her mom. Her and her mother have a very distant relationship, while Anne and her father are very close and loving. “I don't pronounce judgment on Mummy’s character, for that is something I can’t judge. I only look at her as a mother, and she doesn't succeed in being that to me” (Frank 45). I think Anne thinks a lot of her mother but she just can't think of her as a mother figure, or the same way she thinks of her father. “I was lying in bed yesterday evening waiting for Daddy to come and say my prayers with me, and wish me a good night, when Mummy came into my room and, sat on my bed, and asked very nicely, ‘Anne, Daddy can't come yet, shall I say your prayers with you tonight?’ ‘No, Mummy,’ I answered. Mummy got up, paused by my bed for a moment, and walked slowly towards the door. Suddenly turned around, and with a distorted look on her face said, ‘I don't want to be cross, love cannot be forced.’ There were tears in her eyes as she left the room” (Frank 77). I think that her mother is really trying to love Anne like a daughter but Anne makes it too hard for her to act like a mother to her. I feel like since Anne doesn't talk to her mother as much or share her feelings with her is one of the main reasons for Anne starting to write in the diary. I wonder if Anne's mother was out of the picture, how would her relationship with her father and her sister change?

  1. I personally feel like that without her mother, Anne might do one of two things. One is that she would see Margo as more of a mother figure, as she is older and more mature. The other thing I think might have happened is that Anne wouldn't have a mother figure in her life, which can be justified by the fact that Margo is only three years older than Anne. That's my view on if Anne didn't have her mother in her life.

  2. Going off of what Alex says if Anne didn't have her mother the relationship between Margot and herself would be different, not so rocky. But as Jessica says her relationships with people has shaped her perspective into a negative one. The way Anne thinks of herself puts even more pressure and thought into how she sees her life. I agree with the way Jessica talks about Anne's negative perspective and what affects it. That's the input I have for Anne's perspective throughout her diary so far.

  3. I feel like without Anne's mother she would realize how much she really loved her. Anne may even feel regretful of not spending more time with her. I believe she would look to Margot for motherly advice, she may even go to Mrs. Van Daan which would better their relationships and they may get very close.
