Anne Frank Vs. Mrs Van Daan

The relationship between Anne Frank and Mrs. Van Daan has gone downhill to the point where it may not be able to return. At the start , Anne and Mrs. Van Daan are not agreeing eye to eye on a lot of subjects. Everyday it seems like the same thing, they wake up they argue over the littlest of things then they go back to sleep to continue this vicious cycle. A quote from Anne's diary states: " I had just written something about Mrs. Van Daan when in she came. Slap! I closed the book" (Frank 29). This tells me that Anne is not to fond of Mrs. Van Daan if she has to try and hide what she wrote about her. Anne sometimes even wonders why Mrs. Van Daan has to stick her nose in Anne's business: "Why on earth doesn't she keep her mouth shut about me, then she wouldn't need to make such feeble excuses" (Frank 32). As you can tell by this quote Mrs. Van Daan likes to get in other peoples business. At this point it ponders me how this relationship can get any worse but somehow it does.
As time goes on, Mrs.Van Daan is becoming more irritated with Anne and she is even becoming paranoid living in the annex.
One night Mrs. Van Daan thought she heard burglars in the attic, she heard loud footsteps and was so frightened that she woke her husband. Just at that moment the burglars disappeared and the only sounds that Mr. Van Daan could hear were the heartbeats of the frightened fatalist herself" (Frank 69).
This quote alone tells me that Mrs. Van Daan may not be the most mentally sound in the annex, even her husband is starting to doubt her as she is always in a sort of paranoia state of mind where she thinks she hears things that are simply not there.

In conclusion, Anne and Mrs. Van Daan's relationship has gone down below the point of almost no return. I believe that Anne will start to have a better relationship with Mrs. Van Daan. Anne does not seem to like her mom to well and I think she will turn to Mrs. Van Daan as a mother figure. What do you think will happen to their relationship? Will Anne go to her as a mother figure or will this relationship just plummet further and further?
I personally think that Anne will not go to Mrs. Van Dann as a mother figure, just because like you said that their relationship may be to the point where it could not become something positive. If Anne does turn to Mrs. Van Dann what would make her change? And how might her mother react?
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I feel like she can never and will never go to Mrs. Van Daan as a mother figure. They seem to constantly be fighting, and as for Mummy, Anne wrote on Sunday, 2 January, 1944, "The period when I have caused Mummy to shed tears is over." This makes it sound like she can start accepting Mummy as whatever she considered her before, as she has blatantly said that she doesn't see her Mum as a mother figure. So, my question is who might she start seeing as a mother figure?
ReplyDeleteAnne most likely won't go to Mrs.Van Daan like you guys said because of her past relationship with her. I don't know who Anne will see as a mother figure because I'm not sure she even knows who it will be. Have you ever thought that she might chose Margot? and if she does How will Margot react?
