Throughout Anne's diary she has been talking about many different things such as, the people in the annex, what she feels in the annex, and what the annex looks like on a daily basis. Anne also has many different aspects of symbolism in her book and she describes these symbols of what they mean for her and why they are important.
"When I looked into the candle this evening, I felt calm and happy. Oma seems to be in the candle and its Oma too who shelters and protects me and who always makes me feel happy again,"(164).
When Anne talks about this candle I feel as if she thinks that she is safe and protected. That she is living a normal life outside of her real life. But she's not and she probably feels as if this is her only chance and thought of actually being safe in the way she lives there at the annex.
Another example that Anne puts in her diary of symbolism that I pointed out was the window in the attic of the annex. This window means so much to Anne she goes up there everyday. She feels as if when she sits and looks through the window that she is free from being trapped in the place she is now. When she talks about the window she is thinking that she is in a totally different world. For example in Anne's diary entry on Wednesday, 23 February, 1944 she wrote, " As long as this exists, and I may live to see it, the sunshine, the cloudless skies, while this lasts I cannot be unhappy," (158).
This text means that she can be happy as long as she can see through this window because she wants to be able to imagine the life she could have if she was free, if she was out of the annex. Away from all of these people she has to deal with everyday, she would finally be able to live the life she longs for.
Like I said Anne has many different things that symbolize her so another thing she put in her diary is how much she admires her diary. She talks to her diary about how much she admires her because Anne can always talk to her and she can trust that she can know how much she would keep her secret.
" I have two things to confess to you today, which will take a long time. But I must tell someone and you are the best one to tell, as i know that, come what may, you always keep a secret," (128).
Anne talks about her diary as if she is real, as if she is best friends with her in real life. I feel as if this is because Anne can't trust people easily. I don't blame her, she lives with so many people that its hard to know which ones you can trust and which one aren't trustworthy.
Finally the last concrete object that I found in Anne's diary was Peter. Even though Peter is a person and not really an object I felt as if he could symbolize admiration for Anne. Peter and Anne weren't really close to each other that much but now their relationship has grown and each of them individually have grown to become closer to each other. I'm pretty sure that Anne feels as if Peter is also s great source to get all her feelings out.
":Peter put his arm around my shoulder, and I put mine around his and so we remained, our arms around each other, quietly waiting until Margot came to fetch us for coffee at four o'clock," (206).
As you can see in that piece of text that Peter and Anne's relationship has taken a huge jump from being awkwardly shy around each other to being very friendly to each other.
Throughout the diary of Anne Frank you can see that there are many different concrete objects that symbolize Anne Frank in her diary that symbolize who she is as a person. What one do you think symbolizes her the best and why?

I personally think that her diary represents her the best, although it is the most obvious symbol I do think that it is the most important. She tells her diary everything and basically is a replica of her and her personality in written form. Her diary is the most loved possession that Anne has and she trusts it the most with her inner thoughts, more than any individual in the annexe.
ReplyDeleteI also believe her diary symbolizes her the best. It is a really good way for her to express her feelings. The diary to her could mean freedom, she is free to write whatever she wants inside of it. It is also a good way for her not to feel so lonely inside the annex.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything Jessica said. Anne tells her diary literally everything, for better or worse, and what it symbolizes is things that Anne values and really wants at this time, like friendship and trust. It is just to perfect of an answer to this question that it can't be ignored.
